Foam That Fits the Climate

Spray foam insulation is mixed from two liquids at the gun and expands as it lands, filling gaps and bonding to wood, metal and masonry. It insulates and air seals at once. In Weatherford, where July and August highs average near 95F, the main uses are roof decks over attics with ductwork, walls in new construction and additions, and metal buildings.

Open-cell foam

Open-cell foam is soft and light, about R-3.5 to R-3.7 per inch according to HomeGuide. It expands enough to fill rafter bays and stud cavities completely and costs less per inch than closed-cell. It is the common choice for roof decks in North Texas homes, where the goal is to bring the attic and its ducts inside the conditioned envelope.

Closed-cell foam

Closed-cell foam is dense and rigid, about R-5 to R-7 per inch. It slows water vapor and adds stiffness. We use it on metal buildings, where it stops condensation on the steel, and in places where we need the most R-value in the least space.

Where foam is not the answer

On an open attic floor with ducts in good shape, air sealing plus blown-in usually reaches R-38 or R-49 for less. We tell you when that is the better option.

Before and after

We check the roof deck for leaks and rot before spraying it, because foam hides the deck from view. The house is vacated during spraying and for the cure time after; HomeGuide advises at least 24 hours.

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

Who manufactures spray foam insulation?

Two-part spray foam systems come from several national chemical companies. What matters most is that the product is rated for the application and installed at the right temperature and ratio, with any required thermal or ignition barrier.

Does roof-deck foam void my shingle warranty?

Some shingle manufacturers have specific terms for unvented roofs. Check your shingle warranty; we can show you the foam product information to share with your roofer.

Will foam make my attic cooler?

Roof-deck foam keeps the attic much closer to indoor temperature, which helps ducts and the air handler work less.

How long does foam last?

Properly installed, it stays in place for the life of the building.
