The Workhorse of Attic Insulation
Blown-in insulation is loose cellulose or fiberglass delivered through a hose. It fills around joists, wiring and ducts on an attic floor and can be dense-packed into closed walls. For a vented attic with ducts in good condition, it is usually the lowest-cost way to reach the R-38 that the Texas code lists for Zone 3 ceilings, or the R-49 ENERGY STAR suggests for empty attics.
Attics
After sealing the ceiling, we blow insulation to the target depth and leave markers. Baffles at the eaves keep soffit vents open. Ducts lying on the attic floor get covered where practical, which helps them stay cooler.
Walls
Older homes in Weatherford, Mineral Wells and Benbrook sometimes have walls with little or nothing in them. We drill small holes, fill each bay with dense-pack cellulose and patch.
Cellulose or fiberglass
Cellulose is mostly recycled paper treated for fire resistance; it packs densely. Fiberglass is lighter and settles less. Fixr lists fiberglass at $1.65 to $2.60 and cellulose at $1.75 to $3.80 per square foot.

Blown-In Insulation Questions
How deep is R-38?
Roughly 10 to 14 inches depending on the material; R-49 is deeper. We leave markers.
Does blown-in settle?
Somewhat. We install to the settled depth needed for the R-value.
Is blown-in good with attic ducts?
Yes, if the ducts are sealed. If the ducts are a major problem, roof-deck foam may be better.
Can you blow insulation into walls?
Yes, with dense-pack through small holes.
